COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY AWARDS DINNER RECAP

Last month we held the California Commercial Real Estate Awards Dinner at the Renaissance Hotel in Newport Beach, California.

Thank you to the nearly 200 of you who showed up to celebrate our industry’s excellence. Your appreciation does not go unnoticed. You made the night as special as it was supposed to be - especially being paired with CBPA’s 50th Anniversary and Rex S. Hime’s SoCal Retirement Celebration.

Taking the time to celebrate our industry with those who go above and beyond in philanthropy, legislative advocacy, industry advancement, and being a champion of the industry is what this night is all about.

We wanted to take this time to also thank our staff and Co-Chairs for this event, Cox, Castle, Nicholson, who have been helping us put on this event for 20 years to celebrate the commercial real estate industry in California. Matthew Hargrove and Pat Donahue were great behind the microphone, and we can’t thank Crystal, Melissa, and Rex W. enough for all their hard work in planning this milestone event.

If you were unable to make the event, a full recap of honorees, celebrations, and other surprises will be explained below. There is one part you won’t want to miss!

            Honoree: Lew Horne, CBRE

REX S. HIME - CHAMPION OF THE INDUSTRY

This year, we renamed the Champion of the Industry Award to the Rex S. Hime Champion of the Industry Award!

This was done in honor of Rex’s 37 years of service to our industry as President and CEO of CBPA. In fact, one of the first recipients of this newly named award was Rex S. Hime himself! The California Commission for Disability Access gave a tribute to Rex as well, sharing how important he has been to maximizing California to all its residents and visitors. To watch the tribute, CLICK HERE.

Hime began his career at CBPA in 1984 and has been the voice for the commercial real estate industry for almost four decades. During that time, he led the growth of CBPA from less than 100 members to an organization representing over 10,000 companies. Under Hime’s leadership CBPA became the only commercial real estate association in the nation representing all aspects of the retail office industrial commercial real estate industry, bringing together the national organizations of International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP), Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), and the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) to speak with one voice.

Hime helped create coalitions that have stopped the threat of split roll tax several times, most recently Proposition 15 in 2020. He provided leadership to the coalition that secured passage of the law prohibiting commercial rent control in California – making it the only state to enact such legislation. Hime brought together a coalition of the business and disabled communities to successfully achieve passage of landmark legislation redefining the approval process for drivethroughs in California and created the first density bonus program for commercial developments that included childcare centers. And during his tenure Hime was involved in the passage of major infrastructure bonds benefitting all Californians including school construction and water bonds totaling tens of billions of dollars.

Thank you again Rex, you are truly a Champion of the Industry.
