Introducing Your 2024 NAIOP SFBA President Briana Harney DeHaan

Briana Harney DeHaan is Vice President at Northmarq Capital. Since joining Northmarq in 2015 she as has closed over $3 billion in debt and equity transactions covering the full spectrum of lenders and product types.

President’s Message

I am honored to be your President for 2024. NAIOP means the world to me! The organization has been essential to my career development. My first deep dive in engaging with NAIOP SFBA was through the Young Professionals Group (YPG), a program in which I had the good fortune to participate in 2016. YPG made a profound impact on me. I went on to co-chair the Young Professionals Group Alumni Committee and the Membership Committee, and was later appointed to the Board.

On behalf of the NAIOP SFBA Board of Directors and the entire leadership team I want to share our vision statement which will flow through our annual agenda as well as our committees and our events.

Our vision is to be a trusted source and affiliation for commercial real estate:

  • An effective advocate for commercial real estate policies
  • A collaborative and educational event and content provider
  • A financially sound organization
  • A diverse and well-connected network
  • A resource for career development, providing education opportunities for all career stages

My top priorities for 2024

As President my two main areas of focus will be Education and Government Affairs. I will work closely with Committee Chairs to drive our initiatives forward.

As a YPG alum, I know firsthand the value of our signature programs. During my term as President, I will launch a campaign to bring awareness about all of the educational opportunities available through our Chapter such as Real Estate Insider Events, NED, YPG, and our Argus Programs, as well as those that members can access through NAIOP National’s Center For Education.

Secondly, given that it is an election year, I plan to work closely with our Government Affairs Committee, putting a strong emphasis on the importance of donating to our two Political Action Committees (PAC’s). A donation to the PAC is an investment that will help empower the NAIOP SFBA voice to impact issues facing the local commercial real estate industry.

Education

Real Estate Insiders

Real Estate Insider events (or REIs) are exclusive, members-only events that are centered around a specific “hot topic” in our real estate market. These events feature industry leaders fostering discussion around the topic or trend at hand and generate an opportunity for members to learn from one another about what is happening in the markets live-time.

NED

The NAIOP Executive Development Program (NED) is a unique program grounded in neuroscience-backed learning for impact. The program leads its dedicated cohort of 20 participants (max) through a 6-month personal development journey that not only builds upon their existing skills, but also develops key leadership and management expertise to help them grow professionally and personally.

YPG

The Young Professionals Group (YPG) Program is a highly successful education, networking, and leadership program for emerging professionals, 35 years of age or younger, looking to take their career to the next level and further their commercial real estate career.

CREATE

Through our partnership with San Francisco State University and Merrit College, the Commercial Real Estate Alliance for Tomorrow’s Employees (CREATE) helps to address the talent deficit in commercial real estate by educating a diverse workforce and connecting career-ready candidates to employers in the CRE industry.

ARGUS Certfication Diversity Scholarship

NAIOP San Francisco Bay Area Chapter offers a scholarship program for ARGUS Enterprise* Software Certification through the NAIOP Center for Education. This certification is often a required entry-level skill for commercial real estate analyst positions, particularly in asset management and acquisitions. We launched this scholarship to support women and underrepresented minorities, who normally would not be able to complete this program due to cost, to help initiate or further their careers in commercial real estate. To date we have sponsored 14 students.

NAIOP National

We will also highlight the amazing courses available through National including: On Demand Courses, The Advantage Series Webinars, The Individual Course Modules, Corporate Training and Certificate Programs.

Government Affairs

Our chapter has created two political action committees: the NAIOP San Francisco Bay Area Candidate PAC and the NAIOP San Francisco Bay Area Issues PAC

The Candidates PAC is a political committee and 527 organization created to make contributions to candidates for public office who support commercial real estate in the Bay Area. The Issues PAC is a political action committee and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization created to raise funds to support ballot measures which affect the commercial real estate industry.

I plan to boost the visibility of our efforts at the local and statewide levels highlighting the work of our Government Affairs Committee and our lobbyists. With a member base of over 760 professionals and 290 companies we are a formidable commercial real estate community that can drive change.

Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors, members, and volunteers who are instrumental in the success of the chapter. We are committed to driving value and delivering on our key pillars – networking, education, and legislative action.

It is an honor to serve as your President. NAIOP SFBA has been invaluable to me in my career, and I plan to have our value shine through to our membership and community this year.

Wishing everyone prosperity in 2024!

Briana Harney
